So the digital age is here upon us and isn’t it great, well it is now for me. At the start of this gen, digital games (in the UK at least) often carried a 25% premium over their disk counterparts but now they seem to be cheaper by at least 10%. I’m wondering whether or not this is a UK thing probably thanks to inflation & exchange rates or have publishers finally come to the senses and given a real incentive to go digital. Some old British stuff for your time.

Here in the US digital is the same price as disc.

Most of what I’ve gotten has been at par with ordinary new, or (when on sale) substantially less. I can’t recall digital games commanding a premium except when they’ve been out for a while and the used market has tanked the value of disk copies by a lot in comparison. That’s been offset by a recent obsession at MS (I’m a Xbone use) for sales, sales, and more sales a la Steam.

Just buy used PS4/XB1 games on Amazon. Seriously, I’ve had great success with that.

As far as new releases go, it seems like disc and digital versions are priced exactly the same here in the U.S.

I buy digital because me and a friend can go halves and download the game to both of our consoles. Makes them pretty cheap.

I thought they were overall still more expensive, GTA 5 was £55 when we bought it digitally and about £43 on disc at amazon.

Most games are comparably priced, though XBL likes to throw more discounts around than most retailers

That being said, the disc is only there for the license (you install the entire damned thing on the HDD) so there’s very little point to buying physical.

I don’t buy often but in the past (PS3) my buddy and I would split the cost on expansion packs and then download them across both our consoles. GTA took FOREVER to download on PS4 but I figured it was worth it in some way...hasn’t freaked out yet.

How does that work? Do you get to use a digital copy on 2 systems offline on the PS4.

As for the price things. They are usually £50 for third party and £40 for first party on the Xbox One but last year pretty much everything was £55 to £60. I just bought digital copies for both Project Cars and The Witcher 3 for £40 where they are both £45 at my local game.

Na we went halves on GTA 5 and play online together on seperate accounts. Takes a little bit of trickery but it works.

Project cars is £45 on PS4, maybe XB1 and PS4 differ a little.

I have been buying all digital, partly because I was super drunk on the Xbox cool-aid while I was working there. I don't think I have gotten the best prices available since I see cheap stuff on the xbox reddit is mostly physical (and on amazon). But I love not needing to find a disc when I want to play something. It's at it's best when having people over and being able to flip though different games.

In the U.S. new releases are $60 for digital DL or disc. You can save a lot by going to used discs, as they drop pretty fast at Gamestop for a lot of titles. A lot of times you can get a month or two old game for about half price for a used disc where the download stays at regular price. That said the convenience of digital is great because you don’t have to screw around with discs and don’t have to worry about the disc getting scratched or otherwise destroyed. The other benefit of digital is that for most titles you can download it ahead of time and when the release date rolls around you can start playing it immediately instead of having to wait and pick it up from the store.

I like the ability to resale games when I’m through with them so discs are still the way to go for me.

I’ll throw in my $0.02 CDN. Here in Canada, digital and disc are identically priced, just as they are in the U.S.

Unfortunately, AAA games are usually $69 CDN here, whereas they’re $59 USD in the U.S. They were $59 CDN until sometime last year.
